Our History
In 2000, several families began to discuss the need for a unique kind of school in Peoria. They envisioned a place where learning was grounded in the Scriptures, where Christian virtues would be modeled and taught, and where students would be challenged academically. A commitment was made to establish such a school.
The founding board, prompted by the article “The Lost Tools of Learning” by Dorothy Sayers, began to examine school models with a classical and Christ-centered approach to learning. After visiting Logos School in Moscow, Idaho, attending the annual conference of the Association of Classical and Christian Schools (ACCS), and evaluating the performance of students in such classically-oriented schools, the board decided to adopt the classical and Christian approach. But while we had a vision and a mission, we had no students and no teacher! Praying that God would provide a teacher if it was His will for the school to begin, these families saw an amazing answer to prayer in the provision of Aletheia's first full-time teacher for the Kindergarten class.
In September of 2002, Aletheia School opened its doors to three kindergarten students and 2 first graders. The half-day kindergarten was taught by a paid teacher and the second and third graders were taught by a volunteer who was also a mother of one of the students.
In the spring of 2003, the board voted to begin planning on moving the school to West Peoria where the encouragement of a local church could be secured, along with a greater population of possible students. Later that summer, permission was secured to meet in the facility of Redeemer Presbyterian Church (PCA) whose new building is situated along Kickapoo Creek Rd. in Peoria county.
Over the following years, Aletheia continued to add new families, hire new staff, and adapt to the changes that occurred. Soon, our enrollment was exceeding the space provided at Redeemer.
In 2006, Aletheia moved to a new facility in West Peoria. Grades K-7 were offered. This location allowed us to expand our classrooms, adding a science lab, library, and gymnasium. (The students are very excited to be able to dissect and perform multiple scientific experiments during class)!
During the 2008-2009 school year Aletheia expanded to include grades Preschool-10th. It is our hope that our future junior/senior classes will be able to take some of their classes together at local colleges for dual credit. Aletheia hopes to graduate its first senior class in 2012.
Our commitment to parent involvement and small class sizes will continue to make Aletheia unique as we train students to know the Truth, and to live the Truth. The board is committed to seeing a full Pre-K-12th program take shape by 2012, believing that parents should have a biblically-based day school education available to assist them in bringing up their children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
